An Accident Might Befall You At Any Moment, So You Need Short-Term Disability Insurance

Short-term disability insurance came to the forefront of my mind when, Last winter, my husband went out to get the mail, slipped on a patch of ice and went down. His ankle was hurt pretty badly and he was suffering for several days. We were quite relieved to learn that his ankle was sprained and not broken like we thought. We were extremely glad that we would not be forced to spend all of our money on surgeries and procedures that would keep him from working.

We were struck with the sober realization that as we didn’t have any short-term disability insurance, a real broken ankle could be a major issue. We don’t have health insurance from a company plan because we run our own small business out of our home selling jewelry. It was clear that our family needed to get enrolled in an insurance plan that included short-term disability insurance. The problem with this ambitious goal was that there were no instructions regarding how one should look for private insurance plans.

My husband suggested we make a call to an insurance agent, which we figured was a good idea. This was a mistake since the agent never answered our questions and mainly spent the time trying to sell us insurance for a boat that we do not own. We walked out without buying anything from the guy. My husband especially wanted something that was clear and simple to understand. Our searches took us to the internet, but there were so many websites out there that we had a difficult time deciding which ones were worth looking at and which ones were scams.

One feature that we also demanded in an insurance plan was maternity health insurance which was even tougher to find than the short-term disability insurance. While we did not know when we might begin a family, we both knew that it was going to be sooner, rather than later. We could not figure out why it was so amazingly difficult to pay for a private plan that had both maternity coverage and short-term disability coverage.

This became a huge source of frustration because we just wanted a simple way to sort through the different plans with some advice and tips on how to find the one correct for us. I wonder how many other families there are out there who labor in non-traditional jobs who might not have insurance plans offered by their employers. We finally did find a reputable website that provided us with the information we needed, and thankfully, it wasn’t too late.
