Choosing the Right Medicare Insurance Plan

Medicare insurance is a medical program available for people aged 65 and above. This is also available even for people less than 65 years old but with disabilities. Medicare insurance is either administered by the US government or by private organizations. This type of insurance covers several costs for medical care such as hospitalization and doctor visits.

Two types of Medicare insurance

There are two types of Medicare insurance which are Medicare advantage insurance and Medicare supplement insurance, also known as Medigap. Some people get confused with these two and think they are the same. But there’s actually a big difference between the two plans.

People usually pay less money with a Medicare advantage plan. In this type of plan, Medicare partners with a private insurer to manage the insured person’s benefits. The biggest difference between an advantage insurance plan and supplemental insurance is that an advantage plan pays medical expenses instead of Medicare, not after Medicare. You will also be required to make co-payments when you visit a doctor or go to the hospital. HMO, PPO and PFFS plans are the three types of Medicare advantage plans that are currently available.

With Medicare supplemental insurance, you must pay an additional fee that is more than the normal Medicare premium. The higher fee means that supplemental insurance will cover more deductibles or coinsurance payments, and it will pay after Medicare. The benefits you receive from Medicare supplemental insurance are much greater than that, however. Depending on the plan you choose, supplemental insurance covers your Medicare Part A deductible (hospitalization) and Part B deductible (doctor’s fees). In addition to the fact that it might pay 20% of the charges that normal Medicare would not cover, it might even pay the extra 15% of Part B (excess charges) if your doctor does not accept Medicare’s allowable charges. Additional expenses such as traveling within a foreign country might also be paid by a supplemental policy. You are also able to choose any physician or hospital that accepts Medicare when you have a supplemental plan.

Choosing the right Medicare plan

You can choose from different types of plans, so it’s a good idea to know how to select the plan that’s right for you. Keep in mind that not every plan may be available where you live, so your first step should be to look for Medicare insurance plans that are specifically available in your area and then learn about the different choices you can pick from. Then determine whether keeping your costs down or the freedom to use any doctor or hospital is more important. Different people may have different needs and concerns with regard to health care plans, and that is why different types of Medicare insurance exist. After you make that determination, compare each plan’s quality and other important details such as benefits, costs, and the rules for choosing a hospital or doctor. Knowing all your options and these details about each plan will help you decide which plan would be best for you.

The cost of your Medicare insurance typically depends on several factors. The amount you will pay is based on which type of plan you choose, how frequently you go to the doctor or a hospital, and whether you have other insurance. Each of these factors can affect your Medicare insurance cost.
